A good satchel is the telltale symbol of treasure hunters and explorers. Novels, movies, and even children's books depict adventure-seekers with a trusty crossbody bag to carry maps, provisions, and tools of the trade. Maier Mercantile creates modern bags for adventure-seeking people to be prepared for whatever each day brings. Every bag is handmade using repurposed apparel leather or scraps sourced from a furniture company, and vintage or pre-loved belts repurposed into bag straps.
In recent years, I have had trouble finding enough belts to complete all of my bags. I derive great joy from hunting for them as I travel across the country for shows, but when I started to come up short, I knew I needed to expand the hunt.
In the last four years, I have cultivated a network of generous people all over the United States who hunt for belts for me. Recruiting and getting to know kindred spirits who also enjoy the thrill of finding that perfect, soft, beautiful vintage belt has proven to be as fun for me as belt-hunting itself.
