Clay has been an integral part of my life for 49 years. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville and am inspired by the vistas I see and the natural world I encounter daily. My work has grown in three directions. The newest work explores forms that start on the potter's wheel and then are altered in organic ways to become almost floral in form. This body of work is called Nancy O's, referencing the influence of my emotional response to the flower paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe. Visiting O’Keeffe’s homes in New Mexico in 2022 stirred those creative juices. The bottles, vases, and baskets done with horse-hair raku method are an outgrowth of my work teaching at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton. In April, 2022 I retired after 20 years teaching there, but I keep being challenged by teaching many motivated adults at City Clay Charlottesville. Deeply rooted in the vessel aesthetic, I continue to make functional, wheel-thrown pots including platters, bowls, bakers, mugs, canister sets and teapots that enhance daily life.
