I am a metal and silversmith located in Charlottesville, working under the trade name Rani. My affinity for nature and upbringing in Pakistan, specifically my early exposure to the tribal embroidery and mehndi in Sindh Province, inspires many of my designs. I enjoy the subtle interplay of natural and spiritual symbolism, which often manifests in combinations of floral and geometric shapes. I also play on the more practical applications of Victorian era jewelry. For example, I make sterling silver tussie mussies, the Victorian brooch that doubles as a miniature flower vase. I use precious and semiprecious stones to accent and add complexity to my work.

My passion for metalsmithing derives from an interest in the recyclability of metals. I love the infinite life of metal, the fact that something old can become new again and even this new state isn't static, or guaranteed.

My artistic objective is to bring joy to the people who wear my jewelry by making them feel as though they are wearing something beautiful that makes them feel special. My favorite moments are when customers return to let me know how much they continue to love a piece, especially if years have passed.

Earlier, I traded as The Clockwork Witch, fashioning whimsical jewelry, making mini collages out of postage stamps and chocolate foils, arranging watch parts in the foreground, and setting in resin. It was as the Witch that I entered Charlottesville’s art community.
